Bay Path College One America 2012

Bay Path College is a progressive, private woman's college in New England. Students are known by name and not a number on our campus. We offer a broad array of experiential opportunities to augment your in-class learning. Experiences range from internships to international, semester-long travel to short-term U.S. travel such as this 3 credit class and community service project on wheels.

We are The New American Woman's College. Hope you'll hop on board with us some year!

Four days until departure

Our fearless bus driver, Phil, and I spent the day logging in destinations into our GPS. I also heard that the "Magic" bus we are traveling in is having a new glass door installed today. It is expected to be back on campus either tomorrow afternoon or Wed. AM. Yikes! Talk about getting down to the wire! I'm sure no one will be working on Thursday, New Year's Day and we leave at 6:00 AM on Friday. Do you all remember that?

We have one more community service project in Philadelphia thanks to our Board member, Marjorie. We will be serving on Saturday, Jan. 10th at a group project called Values through Sports and Crafts and working with youth in North Philly. We will be staying Friday, Jan. 9th at a hotel just two blocks from the Liberty Bell, right in the heart of the historic district.

I've been told we need to check out Pat's King of Steaks for their "original"? Philly cheesesteaks. Anyone know differently?

The menu from Greenbrier was sent today. Looks scrumptious. Can you tell that one theme of this trip will be food? Will share more tomorrow.

Five days until departure

Before even boarding the bus, this trip has taken many twists and turns. We were challenged to get the cost of this 18 day trip low enough for students to be able to afford it. So, after some readjusting, we replanned it for 8 days at $100/student. We were able to significantly bring the cost down by using our own BPC bus with driver and by renegotiating some overnight accommodations. So, now that we are just 5 days away from departure, here is where we are today: 9 students are participating, one history professor is on board and one administrator, and one driver. A total of 12 of us will depart from Bay Path College at 6:00 AM on Friday, January 2nd and head to Shalom Place for our tour of our overnight facility for that night.

Shalom Place, a ministry of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, seeks to provide economical hospitality and service-learning opportunities to small groups who want to further their understanding and experiences of social justice through volunteer and educational opportunities. Here is a picture of our first night accommodations:

Don't forget sleeping bags everyone! I have extras just in case.
Then, we head out to the 5:00 - 8:00 PM Co-op shift at the D.C. Central Kitchen (about 2 miles away)where we'll be helping unload and prep food for the next day. Here's a link to their site: www.dccentralkitchen.org.
What I am working on today is printing out a complete Google Map of our whole trip and going over my packing list. I'll try to post every day from now on.

This is my first foray into blogging.

Within the next 30 days, some students from Bay Path College, a faculty member, a member of the Bay Path College staff, and an administrator will be preparing to embark on a 17 day community service-oriented road trip through the American South. My hope is that by the end of the trip we will return with a more profound appreciation for difference, a thirst for travel, more comfort with the unfamiliar, and greater self-awareness. Along the way, all participants will blog about their day-to-day experiences so others can vicariously share the trip. Participants will be encouraged to begin posting now to develop some comfort with this medium.
